Europe tour 2012 w/ Georgia Ambassadors of Music

WARNING!!!!  This "warning " goes along side my "warning" in my very first blog post. So you might want to read that one too ;)
I have not figured out how to set pictures & have the text look correct so please excuse my lack of knowledge with all this high tech stuff...LOL!!  Trying to figure out how to fix all my "OOPS" is frustrating. So I just leave it as is. As I am sure you have noticed in my previous blog posts :) Maybe one day I will get it right. Until then, try to look past all my crazy mistakes-hehe!  Thanks!!

If you happen to be "friends" w/ me on Facebook (FB), you probably know that I had to opportunity to go along w/ our oldest son, Zach, on a tour of Europe. Over a year ago Zach received a letter from Dr.Brashier of Valdosta State University to be apart of and play (his bassoon) w/ the Georgia Ambassadors of Music.  This was a huge opportunity because to be apart of this group was by invitation only.  We were very excited for Zach.  At the meeting, we were taken in by the power point presentation of past trips and that parents were invited to come along and not as chaperones either.  Then the cost of the trip came up....that brought us back to reality real quick!   After much thought, we came to the conclusion that this would be a once in a life time opportunity since this tour is every two years. The next trip would be after Zach graduates.  My hubby and I agreed that one of us should go with him. I thought it would be a good idea if he went since he has been over there many times but he thought it best that I went since I share the love for music w/ Zach & he really doesn't care for it much. I will be honest, I was excited but nervous since I had never been anywhere without my hubby or family. Then the thought of having to pay off two of us going on the trip in just over a year time was overwhelming.  We knew that once we started paying there were no refunds if we weren't able to make the payments & couldn't go.  Thankfully with the support & contributions from many of our  family members & us doing without here and there we were able to go on this awesome tour!!

After a long wait, Wednesday, June 6th finally came for us to head up to Stockbridge Ga for a 3 day rehearsal at Woodland High School.  Some kids knew each other but many didn't since this orchestra was made up of teens all over Georgia.  You could tell by the first rehearsal that there was some nervousness & some were timid when playing.  But after all that wore off & the kids began to settle in and have an understanding from Dr.Brashier what was expected of them, they got better. On Friday they performed their first concert for their parents & other family members who were able to come.  All the hard work was paying off but it was also a time to hear the areas that needed work. Saturday we had one last day of rehearsal before we left at 6pm that evening to go to the airport. They would not play again until their first concert in London. When we arrived at the airport, we were told to use the kiosk to check in.  With so many of us checking in at the same time it overloaded the system & then the clerks had to call and have the systems cleared so the computers would accept our passports. That was a little bit of a set back. Once a small group was finished checking in, we were able to go through security. Thankfully Zach & I were the first ones through. It took about 2hrs by the time the rest of the group got checked in and through security. By 10:30pm we were ready to board the plane. Our only concern was Zachs bassoon.  It was longer than a normal carry on and could not go on the plane as a checked luggage since his instrument is very delicate. We were not stopped & his bassoon fit in the over head compartment. Now it was time to settle down & try to rest for the long plane ride and full day ahead since it would be after noon once we arrived in London. I have tons of pictures but I will share what I can to keep this post from being way too long.

                                                                       Off We Go!

We Made It!!!  So the journey begins!  Our first stop, London.  We hit all the major attractions like Buckingham Palace, St.Paul's Cathedral,  Trafalgar Square, Westminster Cathedral,  Parliament, Big Ben , Tower of London, Wesley's Chapel & Piccadilly Circus & much, much more! Due to rain, the band didn't perform but did have a practice session at the hotel. When we were at the Tower of London, we were able to watch a rare event where cannon's shot off 60+ rounds in honor of Prince Phillip's birthday. My favorite part was when a group of us went to see Carmina Burana! The choir & orchestra were amazing! Heard a pianists Benjamin Grosvenor who was great & I was mesmerized by his playing! From Sunday to Wednesday our days were full of adventure & lots of walking!!! Even though there was lots of rain, lots of cigarette smoke and I had not be feeling well ever since the week before, that didn't stop us from enjoying our time there!

We left early Wednesday & drove to Dover dock & took a ferry to France & stayed just out side of Paris

                                                                                                        Dover Docks

Welcome to Paris!!!  It's not the "City of Romance" that I was expecting to see when arriving in Paris....... the homeless, graffiti, people and traffic surrounded us......

I knew there had to be some beauty to this place!!!  Here is the beautiful Paris that everyone talks about ......
We visited the famous hilltop Montmartre & saw the Basilica of Sacre-Couer. We walked through one of the largest museums in the world the Louvre. We took the steps to the 2nd floor of the Eiffel Tower. Walked through Notre Dame and saw many more great attractions. We had our first band concert at Luxembourg Gardens. Everyone was wondering how people would know that they were playing.  Once we got to the park we saw that their were people all around and when they band started to set up those who were in the park began to take their seat.  Then there were those just walking through that would stop & listen and go if they needed too.  They ended up having a good sized audience. After the band concert we then walked to St.Severing for the choir concert.

Is This Really Happening???

Have you ever been surprised? Shocked? Or in a state of confusion before?  I have.  The most recent, memorable moment was when I was 34 yrs old. It was February of 2010. 2 1/2 months after my jaw surgery.

This all happened almost 3 years ago, so I may not have every detail right. But it is to the best of my knowledge & understanding. So I apologize to my family if I misunderstood anything....

FB is short for Facebook ;)

My family and I were sitting at an evening church service when I received a text. I normally I would wait until after the service to look at it, but for some reason I looked at it right then.  It was from my older brother, Kevin. He said something along these lines: "Just got an email on FB from someone who says they might know our mom & is married to our brother". We did not know our biological mother...... I wasn't sure what to think of it. My initial thought was " he's joking with me".  Kevin has alway been the one to to mess around with you but after reading it again, I thought this is something that may be real. I sat there looking at the message w/ an odd look on my face when my hubby asked who it was. I gave him my phone to read the text & we just looked at each other w/ that "what in the world???"look.  Once church let out I called him to find out what he was talking about.  It was a conversation that I would never forget & it almost seemed unbelievable.  I learned that I was one of eight children and our birth mom, Kim, had passed away from kidney failure 3 months earlier in November. My understanding is that when the other kids were going through Kim's stuff, they came across a picture w/ two kids on it & on the back had the name Kevin Hale on it. My sister-in-law, Tiffany, looked up the name in FB & when she saw that there was only one asian looking guy on there she thought this had to be him. LOL!!! And it was.  When I got home I began to look everyone up on my laptop. I was still in a state of unbelief when seeing these people who were claiming to be our siblings on FB. I guess the thing that made it real was seeing pictures of Kim. I had only seen a few pictures of her w/ Kevin when he was baby back in 1974. So I had an idea of what Kim looked like. There were none of me w/ her or as a baby. The earliest baby picture is one my grandparents had made of me when I was about 5 months old when they took guardianship over us. I will be honest, there were times it upset me that there were no pictures, baby book, or anything that would connect me w/ Kim. I guess that is why I never had a longing to find her like Kevin did. I would be lying if I said that we were raised in a non-dis functional home.  As many families, we had our fair share of problems but I know God placed us in the care of our grandparents, our dad, and the many loving family members that surrounded us for a reason. I am truly thankful for being raised in a Christ centered & family oriented home. I have no regrets for I was and still am extremely blessed to be apart of such a wonderful family!  And I am even more blessed as my family has grown in the past three years & relationships have begun to form with my new found family!

The next couple of weeks I was so emotional & overwhelmed by all that was happening & all that I was learning about our new found siblings, Kim & our family in the Philippines. I would find myself crying, tears of joy, as I would think about or look at picture of our new found family. We all had so many questions, some answers (just by that fact that there were other siblings) but a lot left unanswered since those answers could only come from Kim, who was no longer with us. But that is OK because the relationships that are being formed mean more to me than not knowing all the answers. I truly believe that this was all in Gods timing. Why? My two older sisters were raised by their father. Kevin & I by our grandparents & dad and our other three younger brothers and baby sister by Kim & her last husband. So each of us had a different perceptions of Kim. Some good, some not so good. If Kim were still living, I'm not so sure things would turn out that well between all of us kids just because of the hurt that is still there towards Kim & the choices she had made that affected each of us.  My hope is that for those of us who didn't have a good perception of Kim will end up being able to forgive and see Kim in a better way from learning from those who knew and lived w/ her during the later years of her life. We have all made mistakes, gone through different seasons of life but healing begins by accepting that and knowing that through forgiveness we can move forward. As a believer in Christ, I see how Christ forgave me for all my mistakes, wrong thoughts, bad, hurtful & selfish choices....my sins. Who am I that I can't extend that same forgiveness Christ gave me, to another????? On my own, I can't, but through Christ living in & through me, He has made it possible. There was a time that I was held captive by my sin of bitterness, anger, resentment & pride. This led to many more selfish & hurtful choices. And I allowed my life to be led by emotions rather that the Truth... But I realized through reading God's Holy Word, that the Bible full of guidelines, principles, protection & examples of what happens when you live apart from God (death & curses)  & what God has for us when we accept Him as our Savior (life & blessings).  I learned that what was, here on earth (by our own free will), is not what God intended it to be. God put it all out in front of us, we just have to choose which of the two roads we want to take.  The life that I had been living was apart from God,& it couldn't compare to life that He had for me. Which is living in the Freedom of Christ, His Forgiveness, His Grace & His Mercy, which was given to me through His birth, death & resurrection and by Him alone! I serve a God who pursues me and He proved His love for me at the Cross of Calvary!  I am thankful for what God allowed me to go through, trials & all, so that I would come to have a personal relationship with Him & see Him for who He really is!!  My life has become full of hope but not until I stopped running from Him and I allowed Him to embrace me, restore me & to heal my brokenness. Now, I never want to let go!!!!
AMAZING GRACE...MY CHAINS ARE GONE!!!

This November it will have been 3yrs since we have begun this new chapter in our lives. There is still SO much I want to know about my new found sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins. But w/ all of us living in different states, even different countries, it is hard to do. Until that day where we can all unite for the first time, staying in touch through FB & texting is all we have for now. I am thankful that we at least have that.

If I left anyone or anything out, I apologize.  Thankfully, in God's timing, He has opened the doors to so much more than what I could have ever imagined! Although there have been many "up's & down's" in my life, the greatest thing is to see how God continues to bless me beyond what I deserve. And how He reveals more of His Truth to me as I grow closer to Him & the purpose that He has for me & my whole family!!!!

I still have much to share so stay tuned to "Melissa's Moments"!!!!

Ready or Not...

Ready or not....the emotional roller coaster that I didn't realize I was on, was beginning for this season of my life.  I hope you have some time because this may be a long post! ; )
Recovering from this surgery was very exhausting. Physically and mentally.  Physically because it had just drained me.  I recovered from my back surgery pretty well, but this recovery lasted longer than I wanted it too. I think having two major surgeries back to back didn't help.  Mentally was even more of a struggle for me because of the insecurities I had. Throughout my childhood I struggled with not feeling accepted & not "fitting in".  I'm sure there are a lot of people that experienced those emotions too.  My circumstances weren't bad, just different from other children at that time.  My older bother and I were raised by our grandparents on our father's side.  Our parents met while our dad was in the Marines during the time of the Vietnam War.  Our birth mom & dad divorced when we were babies (we are 16 months apart) She went her way & our dad joined the Navy. Our grandparents then had guardianship over us (I was 5months old, I think).  Being bi-racial, raised in a "white" family during those days weren't as common as now. People thought my grandparents adopted us. In elementary, I can remember kids thinking I was lying about not being adopted. In the minds of kids, they saw a brown girl raised in a white family. It didn't make sense how they could be my biological family. In school kids would come up to me saying "What are You????" or are you this or that? I also was called every racial slur there is. No one was ever right though, LOL! As a teenager, on a family vacation, we were all at a mall. Everyone went their own way. My aunt & I decided to go sit down and a man approached us asking my race. I told him & he wasn't very happy w/ that answer b/c it didn't agree w/ his thoughts. He became angry & argumentative so we got up to go find the family, mainly the men, but we couldn't. We tried to get away from him, but he kept following us around yelling at us. People were staring. Finally he left. It was kinda scary.
Through many circumstances in my life, I began to build walls up around me. One of my defense mechanisms was to have sense of "toughness". On the other end, I was shy. Another was to laughed it off but deep down, I was insecure & never completely felt accepted outside of my family.

My best Friend & me
This picture was taken about a month after my surgery during Christmas time. I didn't want my picture taken at all!! I was still swollen & my skin was horrible! It was dry, patchy, splotchy-it just wasn't right & no amount of makeup or moisturizers helped. Each time I looked in the mirror, it scared me. I would just stand there. Staring, questioning, regretting. When no one was around, I would just cry looking at myself. A few months passed & it was hard getting back into the routine of things. Meaning, church, the kids school programs, going out shopping, kids birthday parties, etc.  Anything where people saw me because people still stared. I felt bad for my hubby & kids.. I didn't want them to have that feeling of being embarrassed. Especially the kids. I really dont know why, I just knew people can be cruel sometimes.  I still had trouble speaking. Even though I didn't have the bands on anymore I couldn't open my mouth very wide. It was painful as I tried to get movement of my mouth going again. My tongue was still a little swollen & the shape of my mouth was different so it was kinda like learning how to speak again. It had been a few months since I had been to church. People from sunday school had seen me but there were a lot who hadn't.  I had some awkward moments at church. Like sitting down front thinking I may be recognized. And when people thought I was a visitor or the time I said Hi to someone I knew by name.  They kindly say Hello back but they had that look on their face of "Do I know you?"  I felt bad, and told myself not to call anyone out by name again. I didn't want anyone to feel bad for not recognizing me. It was understandable since I didn't recognize myself either.
Most of the time when I would go out it would always be w/ my family. But I will never forget one Jr.High concert I went to w/out my hubby being there b/c he was working. My friends were there saving me a seat. The place was packed & loud!! I was still in my early stages of recovery-bands, swollen, no facial expressions & couldn't speak or breathe well. I almost didn't go, but we never missed a concert so I had to suck it up & go. Her husband met me & my youngest to take us to our seats. I was already self conscience & our seats were in the middle on the other side of the gym. Where the band was set up, I had to walk across the middle of the gym to get to our seats. We were the only ones walking across the gym at that time.  As I got closer to the middle section steps, I could see people just staring at me. It wasn't that look that people normally do when someone is trying to get to their seat, but that odd look of "what happened to her???" look. I sat down, tried to carry on a conversation w/ my friend the best I could b/c it took a lot out of me trying to talk over the loudness of the gym. I could see out of the corner of my eye the people behind me looking, especially the young boy right behind me. It was like he couldn't take his eyes off me. The concert was great & I was proud of both the kiddos but I was ready to go. I just had to make it through the, up close & personal crowd, that was try to make its through the double doors. Then stand there & wait for the kids to put their instruments away!  I can't say that this night didn't have an affect on me, it did. I now had an understanding of what someone disabled, scarred, burned, disfigured, might feel like.  Except I knew the way I looked was temporary. It was heart breaking to think that the feelings I had of embarrassment, loneliness, separation, avoidance, wanting to hide & not go anywhere may be feelings they live with everyday- for the rest of their life. And for me, I tried to play if off but starring just made things worse and I wondered if it did for them too. Even those quick looks, you know, "I'll look but as soon as they look at me I'll look away." I've tried teaching our children not to stare at those who looked "different" b/c we didn't know their story & like I was told "it's just not nice to stare".  I know we are human & people will stare and I have been guilty of starring & quick looks too, but now I could actually explain to them how staring might make them feel now that I have experienced it for myself. With those insecurities, I started to be overwhelmed with who I was. Not just because of how I looked but what I couldn't do anymore. Singing. I've always love to sing and I was passionate about serving in the Music Ministry at church, that's my heart. I tried singing and doing voice exercises at home but I was becoming so discouraged. I started to give up & believe that I couldn't sing anymore. I was having an identity crisis. I was daily going to the Lord, crying, speechless, broken.  Many wordless prayers, but the Lord knew my heart.  I love Worship, Praise & Christian music.  The Lord brought many songs my way to speak to me. He was getting my mind off myself, my insecurities, my doubt- me, and getting my focus back on Him. Who He is. What He did for me. How he loves me. And how He alone can fix my brokenness.  He told me to get back in choir. I could hit some notes but most of the time I just stood up there pretending to sing. I started to accept that this is all I was going to be able to do for now on. I started to notice that the more I sang the more my voice was starting to come back. Even though I still struggled A LOT the Lord told me to tell the Music Minister that I was going to try out for the Praise Team again. Being on the PT was a blessing but I lacked confidence b/c of some problem areas I still had. Thankfully I was able to take voice lessons at the church. This really helped & surprisingly I was getting my voice back.  As the choir began going over new music, I was asked to sing a song called "Not Guilty" by Mandisa. It is such a great song! As I started to learn it I became very doubtful. I was struggling with it & was ready to throw in the towel.  I came very close to telling him that I wasn't going to be able to do it. But the song just spoke to me. As it came time to sing in front of the church again, I was very nervous. I prayed for the Lord to sing through me. And He did! Dont get me wrong, when I sing it is not w/out flaws. But that is what I love about the Lord, you dont have to be perfect. The Lord isn't looking for perfection, He's looking at our hearts. The point was for me to realize it's all about Him! That my identity is in HIM not me, not what this world offers, not who people say I am, not the abilities I have, not what I want others to think of me, how I look, just Him!
As the months went by and I started to look & feel more "normal", those insecurities started to go away. I still had my moments, but I started to feel whole again, if that makes sense.
I love our Tuesday morning bible studies at SBC.  God always leads me to what I need.  I started a study by Jennifer Rothschild called "Me, Myself & Lies". Ps 19:14 was the verse that was continual throughout the study "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer".  The Lord started to speak even more to me about my identity & how mine and others words/thoughts can have great influence on me. But it is God who spoke all things into existence, all He created was good (me & you), and it is His words that have power. I had to replace the thoughts I had of myself which were, not good enough, unaccepted, ugly, etc...
These were LIES from satan & I needed to renew my mind w/ the Truth of God's Word which He says I am accepted, loved, precious. I needed to know that my feelings & false assumptions are not related to who God is and what He is capable of.  Satan doesn't do anything w/out my (our) permission. He is waiting for me to give him something so he can attack me with it. I have to daily renew my mind with God's Truth, that's where the power is to overcome & defeat the one who has come to steal, kill, destroy, deceive, lie & curse me (you). I tried to sum up this 6wk study the best I could, but I could go on and on about how the Lord spoke to me during this study.

I had become so focused on myself that I was forgetting Who He is- He's my Creator. He made me perfectly. I am accepted by Him. He loves me unconditionally. He is my Comforter. In my weakness, He is my Strength. He hears my cries when no one else does and is there to wrap His arms around me & pick me back up in a way that none other can.  He is the reason why I loved to sing. It is Him who gave me the ability and the purpose for my singing. It is all for Him! He is God the Father, Jesus my Savior!
